Inspired by a caterpillar I decided to cut plant leaves the same way as other artists do with paper, that idea captivated my whole mind because it looked like a great opportunity to combine two of my true passions: art and nature. Due to the lack of information about the "leaf cutting art" I have developed my own technique, going through a long trial-and-error process until I found a good way of cutting my designs without spoiling the leaf. I use a surgical scalpel to cut the figure, removing the plant tissue until the image, previously drawn on paper and fixed to the leaf, appears. My geometric or figurative designs mostly come from my innate observation of nature and the personal metamorphosis I have gone through in recent years.
Lorenzo M. Durán
Born in 1969, in Cáceres, Spain, and raised in Düsseldorf (Germany) and Madrid (Spain). I've been living in Guadalajara (Spain) since 2004. I am a self-taught artist who found out at age 36 that he had left aside two of his true passions: art and nature. My awareness came one day, in 2005, when unemployment appeared in my path, providing me with lots of time to think about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, and then I began living an existential metamorphosis which has turned me into a man who is increasingly aware of his inside, his shadow, and that attempts to communicate with all of that through one of the tools he knows better: art.
Once I took this path I decided to start by the classic Oil on canvas, from which I never entirely separate, and I was fortunate to have attracted interest in the "Fundació de les Arts i els Artistes" (Barcelona), where they purchased my work "Entre cielo y tierra" (Between sky and earth) for the collection of the "Museu d'Art Modern Europeu, MEAM" (European Museum of Modern Art). But I would have a new inspiration later on (in the summer of 2006), a caterpillar eating a leaf would give me the idea of changing the canvases by plant leaves, and that opened a world of possibilities I'm exploring little by little.
Failing to find enough information about the "leaf cutting art" I have developed my own technique for doing it, which has gone through a long trial-and-error process, until I found a good way of cutting my designs without spoiling the leaf. My main tools are a surgical scalpel and a dental pointed devise which helps me when removing the cut parts. Although most of the plant species that I collect are from my residence area, any new leaf is a challenge for me, so I do not rule out others.
